Criminal Law Symposium

The Texas Tech Law Review is proud to host the 14th and 15th Annual Criminal Law Symposium on Thursday, April 8th, and Friday, April 9th. The symposia will be live-streamed and offered for CLE credit. REGISTER NOW

Thursday, April 8th’s event will be focused on the topic of Double Jeopardy. The event will begin with an Opening Keynote speech from Professor George Thomas, one of the country’s most respected criminal law scholars, from Rutgers Law School. The luncheon speaker will be Professor Akhil Amar from Yale University. Professor Amar is world-renowned for his expertise in constitutional law and criminal procedure.

The Symposium will also include three panels discussing the following topics: (1) Did the Supreme Court get the separate sovereignties question correct in the Gamble case? (2) Under what circumstances should a retrial be permitted following a mistrial? (3) Should the United States consider adopting a more flexible form of double jeopardy similar to England or Australia?

The panelists will include the following (in alphabetical order): Ron Allen (Northwestern), Ray Diamond (LSU), Arthur La France (Lewis and Clark), Steve Henderson (OU), Thea Johnson (Maine), Adam Kurland (Howard), Arnold Loewy (Texas Tech), Michael Mannheimer (Northern Kentucky), Caren Morrison (Georgia State), Steven Mulroy (Memphis), Dr. Roderick Munday (Peterhouse Cambridge), Melanie Reid (Lincoln), Dean Strang, and Russ Weaver (Louisville). Moderators will include Dean Jack Wade Nowlin, Patrick Metze, and Brian Shannon (Texas Tech).

Friday, April 9th’s event will center around the Fourth Amendment, Confessions, and Substantive Criminal Law. The event will begin with an Opening Keynote speech from Professor Arnold Loewy from Texas Tech School of Law. There will not be a luncheon speaker.

The Symposium will include three panels. The panels and panelists will include the following: (1) The Fourth Amendment: Morgan Cloud (Emory), Donald Dripps (San Diego), David Gray (Maryland), Orin Kerr (Cal. Berkeley); (2) Confessions: Darryl Brown (Virginia), Richard McAdams (Chicago), Ron Rychlak (Ole. Miss), Mike Vitiello (Pacific); (3) Substantive Criminal Law: Catherine Hancock (Tulane), Joe Kennedy (UNC), Susan Rozelle (Stetson), Chris Slobogin (Vanderbilt). Arnold Loewy will moderate the three panels.
